Implicit representation IR
IR is a collaboration between dGB and the Norwegian R&D institute Sintef. The objective is to support Implicit Representation in OpendTect and to develop new IR tools for seismic modeling & interpretation. Implicit Representation is a new technology that allows on-the-fly creation of 3D bodies and surfaces. The technology is ideally suited for creating bodies from object "probability" cubes (e.g. chimney and fault cubes). Compared to explicit representations (e.g. triangulated surfaces) IR has several large benefits: a) Editing is fast and intuitive (geometry processing is much simpler); b) Boolean operations between bodies are trivial (computing of intersections, volumes etc.). Moreover, it is not very difficult to convert IR to explicit representations. It should thus be possible to build and edit geologic models in OpendTect and export these models to other packages.
